Aircraft observations and sub‐km modelling of the lake–land breeze circulation over Lake Victoria

چکیده
The lake–land breeze circulation over Lake Victoria was observed in unprecedented detail with a research aircraft during the HyVic pilot flight campaign January 2019. An evening and morning lake land breezes respectively under mostly dry conditions. at various heights along transect across onshore Tanzania. Profiles of lower troposphere were recorded by dropsondes land. Convection-permitting MetUM simulations different horizontal grid-spacings (including sub-km) run for periods. During flight, crossed front 1627 LT, approximately 50 km to east shore, recording 6 g · kg − 1 decrease specific humidity reversal wind direction ∼ 5 km. shallow eastern shore 0545 LT. At least one region increased deeper moisture (previously seen but never observed) sampled surface between 0527 0855 This bulge likely formed from lifting near-surface moist air above low-level convergence. observations model suggest that convergence occurred leading edge breeze, which had detached main independently propagated westward wave-like characteristics. able reasonably reproduce front, feature, its propagation, is major achievement given sparse observational data initialisation this region. However, some timing, resolution boundary-layer depth biases require further investigation. Overall, provided an snapshot motivates more comprehensive field future.

Hazardous thunderstorm intensification over Lake Victoria
Weather extremes have harmful impacts on communities around Lake Victoria, where thousands of fishermen die every year because of intense night-time thunderstorms. Yet how these thunderstorms will evolve in a future warmer climate is still unknown. Here we show that Lake Victoria is projected to be a hotspot of future extreme precipitation intensification by using new satellite-based observatio...
متن کاملLidar Observations and Comparison with Numerical Simulation of a Lake Michigan Land Breeze Front
As a part of the Lake-Induced Convection Experiments (Lake-ICE), on December 21, 1997 the University of Wisconsin Volume Imaging Lidar (UW-VIL) observed a visually stunning example of a shallow (~75-100 m) land breeze circulation over Lake Michigan. Backscatter returns revealed a steady offshore flow extending 1.5 to 4 km offshore, at which point it met the prevailing winds, which directly oppo...
متن کاملTransport of Sulfur Oxides within the Los Angeles Sea Breeze/land Breeze Circulation System
The sea breeze/land breeze circulation system in the Los Angeles area results in transport of pollutants seaward at night followed by return of aged material inland the next day. This characteristic wind reversal pattern both increases the retention time available for the oxidation of S02 to for m sulfates and causes individual air parcels to make multiple passes over large coastal emissions so...
متن کاملSimulation of Lake Victoria Circulation Patterns Using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS).
Lake Victoria provides important ecosystem services including transport, water for domestic and industrial uses and fisheries to about 33 million inhabitants in three East African countries. The lake plays an important role in modulating regional climate. Its thermodynamics and hydrodynamics are also influenced by prevailing climatic and weather conditions on diel, seasonal and annual scales. H...
